Planted shade: a cool oasis in the heat of the city

Our catalog

Installing shade structures in the urban environment is a way of coping with the extreme temperatures caused by climate change and the over-concreteization of cities. The choice ofplanted shade, favored by many local authorities and companies, combines cooling, revegetation and the promotion of exchanges. Polymobyl presents the advantages of this now essential urban amenity.

What is a green roof?

With global temperatures set to rise by 1.43°C by 2023 (source: IPCC), the effects of global warming can no longer be ignored. These effects are particularly felt in urban areas, where the lack of vegetation combined with the artificialization of land prevents cooling during heatwaves. To protect vulnerable populations and try to bring summer temperatures down, there are a number of solutions available.Vegetated shading is one of them.

This is a pergola or parasol-type shade structure, combined with a planter or plant trough, or even a water collection system or misting device. The benefit is twofold: to provide users with a shaded area and the coolness provided by the evapotranspiration of plants.

The ecological benefits of vegetated shade structures

In Tel-Aviv, where the thermometer remains stuck at 30°C in summer, an area 70% covered by a vegetated shade structure reduces the temperature by 3.5°C. This design blocks out some of the sun’s UV rays, while lowering the temperature within the enclosure.

From an environmental point of view, the installation of vegetated pergolas in urban environments has a dual appeal: to counter the concreteization of cities, and to reintroduce local species that are resilient and adapted to the area’s climate.

The other advantage of shaded areas with planters is social. By providing planted spaces, or even creating mini urban gardens, they encourage human relations and reconnection within neighborhoods.
