Mountain signage: multiple constraints

Signage in mountain environments is characterized by its particular features: altitude, snow, wide temperature range, very different visitor numbers depending on the season… The challenge is to design a harmonious, useful and legible whole that conveys the essential information and values of the community.

Polymobyl focuses on several key points when designing station signage:

  • Use of resistant materials adapted to the climatic conditions of the high mountains;
  • Legibility of instructions, particularly in relation to safety ;
  • Optimum visibility and color-coding for easy identification by users;
  • Adapting supports to the terrain and signage objectives;
  • Customization according to your graphic charter.

What kind of signage media should you use in the mountains?

Ski resort signage uses a variety of media, depending on the message to be conveyed and the location. These can include directional masts to help users find their way from a distance, totems indicating useful addresses, information panels, wall plaques…

The presence of snow and sub-zero temperatures in winter, alternating with the special sunshine of the mountains in summer, calls for the use of robust materials and durable personalization techniques. Signage in treated wood, sheet steel or lacquered aluminum, the use of high-resistance paints or laser engraving create a legible, aesthetic and resistant whole.

Polymobyl achievements in mountain resorts

Polymobyl and Studio Y have carried out two major signage projects in France, for the Alpe d’Huez and Vaujany ski resorts. In both cases, our mission was to :

  • Carry out an audit of existing signage and analyze mobility flows;
  • Redesign the entire signage system, with carefully considered materials (wood, wood-look aluminum, etc.) and design;
  • Create signage for shops and amenities as well as the ski area;
  • Manufacture and install various signage supports for ski resorts.

The Verbier ski resort in Switzerland has also called on our services. In each case, we have adapted our ranges to the specific characteristics of the site: materials, layout, dimensions, colors…
