Tourist signage: media, formats and challenges
Any project to develop a site for visitors requires a number of steps, the first of which is careful questioning. Before deciding which tourist signage materials to use, it’s important to consider the project as a whole.
The signage of a tourist attraction meets three essential needs: to inform and orientate visitors, to enhance its heritage and to blend in with its surroundings. These three axes are then adapted to the project, the site and the desired visual identity.
Signage supports come in a variety of shapes, sizes and functions:
- masts and arrows are generally used for directional purposes;
- information panels can be wall-mounted or free-standing;
- wall signs are particularly suitable for concise information or images ;
- totems are excellent for providing information and direction, as they can be seen from a distance;
- Lecterns and orientation tables are used to display visuals, identity elements or tourist information, for example.
